  • Shell Springboard Wins Energy Institute Award

    2009-11-26 09:34:04

Shell UK achieved international acclaim last week, winning the award for the best community initiative at the Energy Institute Awards for their National Social Investment Programme, Shell Springboard.

Shell UK fought off competition from the other finalists such as the Alternative Energy Development Corporation and Scottish Power Energy Network to come top of the category.

Now in it’s 5th year, the Shell Springboard programme offers no-strings finance to UK businesses with commercially viable, innovative business ideas to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Through Shell Springboard, Shell aims to encourage companies to make the most of the business opportunities in tackling climate change and addressing the energy challenge. Lack of access to seed funding can prevent low-carbon business ideas getting off the ground. Shell Springboard aims to help businesses overcome this hurdle by generating growth in the low-carbon market.

Shell Springboard awards £40,000 a year to 8 UK-based small to medium sized enterprises across three regions. Businesses are judged by an external panel against the criteria of carbon saving, commercial viability and innovation. Since it’s launch in 2005, Shell Springboard has received over 900 applications, and awarded £1.32 million to 35 businesses. Winners benefit from a raised profile, which enables them to leverage funding from other sources supported by the PR, media coverage and contacts Shell can generate on their behalf.

With a combined membership of over 14,000 individuals and 300 companies across 100 countries, the Energy Institute (EI) is the leading chartered professional membership body for those working and studying in energy. Providing an independent focal point and a powerful voice to engage business and industry, government, academia and the public, the EI promotes the safe, environmentally responsible and efficient supply and use of energy in all its forms and applications.

There were eight award categories; Communication, community initiative, environment, individual achievement, innovation, safety, technology and international platinum.

Applications to the 2010 Shell Springboard award scheme closed on the 6th November 2009. Winners for 2010 will be announced at three regional events in Edinburgh, Manchester and Cambridge. The UK winner and runner up will be announced at the UK final in March.
