A dazzling idea for the future of lighting
The traditional, energy-guzzling filament bulb has had its day. Households around the UK are now switching to energy efficient light sources, but the question is, are they choosing the right ones? For instance, the most popular alternative, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) aren’t as green or efficient as they seem, and the quality of the light they produce is often perceived as being quite poor. For example, they contain mercury, a toxic contaminant, which means they incur disposal costs (presently hidden from domestic users) and they carry a risk of polluting landfill sites.
Recognising this, Morton Graham, the founder of Luminanz has developed the TorusLite, a low carbon, energy efficient lighting using the latest high brightness white
light emitting diode (LED) technology. Unlike CFLs, TorusLites can last without maintenance for over 50,000 hours, are mercury free and cost nothing to dispose of.
Households using TorusLites could save at least 70% of their standard electricity bill, as the lights are four times more efficient than standard incandescent bulbs and two times more efficient than a halogen bulb.
Luminanz predicts that it could one day be possible to replace 95% of all filament and fluorescent lighting in use today with TorusLites - from billboards to bedrooms. Cleaner, brighter and more effective, TorusLite could put all other light bulbs in the shade.
